Frequently Asked Questions
Using the Gallery
What does the gallery show?
Initially each gallery view displays a random selection of 20 works. Works appear either as an image or as a logline. For time-based works, a short excerpt plays in a loop. I can pause the automatic playback using the pause function.
I can decide whether I mainly want to see text, images, or a combination of both. Hovering with a mouse or touching with a finger switches the display between image and text. Clicking on a work opens the detail view.
How can I filter or sort the gallery?
I can filter by themes, formats, or series. In addition, I can enter thematic keywords in the free-text search.
Multiple filters can be combined and removed individually or reset completely. Filters always apply to the entire collection of the selected language version — not just to the current view.
Can I share or save my filter results?
Yes. I can copy, save, or share the URL of the current view and return to it later.
How do I share works?
Each work has its own URL. This allows me to save or share individual works directly.
How do I view a preview?
Clicking on a work opens the detail view. There I can see a main image as well as additional views or scenes from the work.
Using the magnifier icon opens an enlarged preview in higher quality. Images and videos are protected by watermarks. Time-based works can be viewed in full here.
How do I make my selection?
If I am interested in a work, I open the detail page and choose a suitable licence: Layout, Simple, or Extended. Using “Add to Selection,” I can collect works in the “My Selection” area.
There, I can also remove works and narrow down my selection. The free Layout licence is available for drafting and testing purposes.
Is there a user account?
No. We do not provide user accounts and do not store data about usage behaviour.
We want to share art with you — not monitor your behaviour. That is why you decide if and how you would like to get in touch with us.
Only when acquiring a licence will the contact details required for invoicing be requested and stored.
Are there cookies?
No. The website functions without cookies.
Is there a newsletter?
Yes. We provide occasional updates about developments on the website and newly added works. If I would like to receive the newsletter, I can subscribe and unsubscribe again at any time.
Selection & Licences
Do I buy a work?
No. I acquire a licence to use a work in a context of my choosing, as long as I comply with the terms of use.
The work does not become my property. Instead, I become one of many possible users of the same work.
What does a usage licence mean?
A usage licence grants me the right to publicly integrate a work into a defined context.
The work itself remains unchanged and does not become my property. I am therefore not allowed to resell, edit, modify, or shorten it.
The exact conditions are defined in the terms of use.
What is the difference between the Simple and Extended licence?
The key difference lies in the scope of use.
If I want to use a work in a smaller, temporally or locally limited context, the Simple Licence is usually sufficient. For larger audiences or more extensive contexts, I need the Extended Licence.
What does the Layout licence cover?
The Layout Licence allows me to download a copy of the work free of charge for draft, layout, or testing purposes.
The file corresponds to the original in format and duration, but is watermarked, more heavily compressed, and therefore lower in quality.
With this licence, I receive a pro forma invoice as well as a download link to the marked file.
If I later want to use the work in full quality, I can purchase the appropriate usage licence.
In what context may I use the works?
The offered licences apply exclusively to non-commercial uses.
If I want to use a work in a commercial context, I can contact KOMBINAT Tanz und Film by email: anfrage@kombinat-tanz-film.de
What constitutes a non-commercial use?
Non-profit, non-commercial uses are primarily not aimed at financial gain, but instead pursue goals such as research, culture, education, mediation, or social work.
Non-commercial does not mean “without value” or “without budget.” The key factor is that the works are not used to promote, sell, or commercially exploit products or services.
As soon as works appear in advertising, brand communication, paid media formats, or other commercial contexts, their use is no longer considered non-commercial.
In case of doubt, individual clarification is recommended, as hybrid forms may be assessed differently depending on context.
Why is usage restricted?
KOMBINAT kombiniert Tanz und Film g.UG operates as a non-profit organisation and is not primarily profit-oriented. This made it possible to create the works in the quality offered here.
The licences are intended to enable uses that foster dialogue, exchange, and co-creative processes, and to position art as a communicative tool.
Commercial uses are excluded under the available licences. For individual requests, separate arrangements may be possible: nutzungsanfrage@kombinat-tanz-film.de
What do the ethical guidelines define?
The works must not be used in discriminatory, defamatory, or degrading contexts. This includes in particular racist, sexist, ableist, or ideologically defamatory settings. The ethical guidelines require respectful treatment of people, themes, and artistic works.
Purchase & Download
What happens after purchase?
After acquiring a licence, I automatically receive a confirmation email. This email includes an invoice as well as a download link to the file.
For the Layout Licence, the link leads to a marked preview file with a watermark. For the Simple or Extended Licence, I receive access to the high-resolution original file without a watermark.
How do I receive the download link?
The download link is sent by email and is also included on the invoice, which is attached to the email as a PDF.
How long is the link valid?
The download link is generally active for 14 days.
Do I receive an invoice?
Yes. I receive an invoice with the details I provided during purchase.
Are there discounts?
Some works are part of series. If I acquire usage licences for all works in a series, the corresponding discount is applied automatically.
Authors & Funding
Are the authors paid?
Yes. Some works were commissioned, others created independently. These different starting points are taken into account when distributing fees and revenue shares.
Are licence fees passed on?
Revenue from licences first contributes to covering the technical and organisational costs of the online platform. In addition, the contributing authors participate in the revenue.
How is the project funded?
The idea of using art as an impulse for co-creative processes was developed within the funding programme “DIWA – Digital Change in the Arts,” where it was initially prototyped. The ongoing operation of the platform is co-financed through the licences offered.
